Secure your dates by booking your tickets here, and be sure to check out these must-see highlights during your visit:
1. The Great House and Formal Gardens

St. Nicholas Abbey was built in 1658 and is a rare architectural style called Jacobean—one of only three examples left in the Western Hemisphere. Originally constructed by Colonel Benjamin Berringer as a plantation home, it has passed through several families, each adding their chapter to its history.
Over the years, it’s been a private residence, a sugar plantation, and now a heritage site that preserves a piece of Barbados’ colonial past. Inside the Great House, you’ll find historical artifacts that bring its story to life.
One highlight is the only functioning fireplace in Barbados—a striking reminder of the island’s colonial ties to England. The interior is filled with antique furniture, fine china, and portraits, giving you a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the plantation owners.
Step outside and explore the formal gardens, a peaceful spot that perfectly matches the house’s beauty. The gardens are filled with fragrant flowers, towering mahogany trees, and winding pathways great for a relaxing stroll.
Don’t miss the lily pond or the gazebo, which offers gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Fun fact, some of the trees here are over 300 years old, and are impressively tall, reaching heights of over 100 feet. These giants are a key feature of the estate, creating a stunning canopy and adding to the historic charm of the property.

2. The Distillery and Rum Bottling Plant

At the distillery and rum bottling plant, you’ll get an up-close look at the entire rum-making process, from the moment fresh sugarcane is added to create their signature flavor, to the aging process that gives their rum such rich depth and character.
During your visit, you’ll enjoy a complimentary rum tasting, sampling their famous sugarcane rum crafted using traditional methods. As part of the tour, you’ll see how the rum is bottled and even have the chance to fill your own bottle.
You can personalize it with your name, and watch as it is sealed, creating a unique keepsake to take home. The experience also includes a fascinating video presentation that shares the history and heritage of St. Nicholas Abbey, bringing the rum-making journey to life.
It’s a great way to engage in the craftsmanship and tradition of Barbadian rum!

3. The St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway

The St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway is an exciting new addition to the site, offering visitors a unique way to explore the historic plantation.
This optional experience features a restored steam train that takes you on a scenic journey through the plantation grounds and lush gardens, all the way up to Cherry Tree Hill.
Despite its name, Cherry Tree Hill doesn’t have cherry trees, but it offers a stunning viewpoint overlooking Barbados’ rugged east coast.
The train ride includes a knowledgeable guide who shares fascinating stories about the area’s culture and history, making it an engaging experience for all ages.
While the train is a fantastic way to explore, visitors can also choose to skip the ride and drive to Cherry Tree Hill on their own, or simply only visit the house and distillery instead.
