Having visited Milan multiple times, I’ve fallen in love with its unique blend of modernity and Italian charm. While often overshadowed by Rome, Florence, and Venice, Milan is less crowded, high-class, and hosts some of the best day trips in the world.

Many travelers overlook it, thinking there’s not much to do or see. Though The Last Supper is a must-see, tickets are hard to come by—I missed out twice! If you’re planning a trip to Italy, don’t skip Milan. This post will answer the question “Is Milan worth visiting?” and show you why it deserves a spot on your Italian itinerary!

Reason 1- Less Crowded Yet Still Captivating

One of the great things about visiting Milan is that it feels less crowded than other popular Italian spots. While cities like Rome and Venice are packed with tourists, Milan offers a more laid-back vibe. This makes exploring the city way more enjoyable, letting you soak in its beauty without dealing with huge crowds.

Milan might not have as many attractions as Rome or Florence, but it definitely makes up for it, with quality. Places like the Sforza Castle and the Brera Art Gallery offer quieter yet equally rich cultural experiences. These places give you a peek into Milan’s amazing history and artistic heritage, minus the tourist mobs. I was able to buy my ticket and walk straight into the Sforza Castle and walk the grounds on my own time.

When it comes to what to see, Milan is all about quality. The Milan Cathedral (Duomo) took nearly 600 years to build! The city is packed with top-notch museums, stunning churches, and beautiful parks. The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci at Santa Maria delle Grazie and the breathtaking Milan Duomo are must-sees that stand up to any attraction in Italy, offering an experience that’s both enriching and doable in just a few days.

FYI I highly recommend getting the Milan City Pass since it includes entry tickets to over 10 attractions and museums, plus 3 days of unlimited travel on all Metros!

Reason 2- It Has A Touch of Class

If you’re looking for a city that exudes class and sophistication, Milan is your destination. Often compared to Paris for its chic atmosphere, Milan is the fashion capital of the world. High-end boutiques, designer stores, and stylish cafes line the streets, making it a paradise for fashion enthusiasts and luxury seekers. (you can read about the best shopping spots here!)

Milan is synonymous with fashion. The city hosts Milan Fashion Week, one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world. Here, you’ll find the major stores of luxury brands like Gucci, Prada, and Versace. I visited two weeks before fashion week and my college budget took me to a boutique thrift store. Naive me thought I could snag something couture on a dime. That is when I learned “boutique” means expensive!

Milan’s culinary scene is also as sophisticated as its fashion. From Michelin-starred restaurants to trendy rooftop bars, the city offers a dining experience that caters to every taste. Enjoy a gourmet meal at La Scala, followed by a nightcap at one of Milan’s stylish lounges, and you’ll understand why Milan is often likened to Paris for its elegance and charm.

Reason 3- Italy’s Most Modern City

Milan is Italy’s most modern city, balancing historical respect with a love for innovation and contemporary design. The city’s skyline features sleek skyscrapers, and its public spaces blend the old and new, reflecting Milan’s dedication to progress while honoring its past.

As a hub of modern architecture, Milan impresses with the Porta Nuova district and its futuristic skyscrapers like the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest), showcasing its innovative spirit. The UniCredit Tower, Italy’s tallest building, and the modern Piazza Gae Aulenti are other cool examples of Milan’s architectural skills, making the city a haven for design fans.

On top of that, Milan is Italy’s economic powerhouse. It’s packed with multinational corporations, startups, and business centers. Whether you’re a business traveler or just curious about the modern face of Italy, Milan shows how tradition and innovation can get along, making it a fascinating spot for anyone.

Reason 4- The Best Day Trips In The World

One of Milan’s biggest perks is its prime spot on the map. It’s a great base for day trips to some of Italy’s most beautiful spots. Whether you’re into exploring pretty lakes, charming villages, or historical cities, Milan’s central location makes it easy to set out and discover more of Italy.

Just an hour’s train ride from Milan, Lake Como is a must-see, with its stunning scenery and fancy villas. Don’t miss visiting the picturesque village towns of Bellagio and Varenna. Other nearby treasures in Italy include Cinque Terre and Portofino on the seaside. Additionally, you can explore St. Moritz in the Swiss Alps, and even Nice and Monte Carlo on the French Riviera, all easy to reach from Milan.

Whether you’re up for hiking in the Alps, exploring historic castles, or enjoying a wine tour in Lombardy, Milan’s closeness to so many attractions makes it a perfect start for various day trips. These adventures let you experience the best of Italy’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, all within a short ride from Milan.

Plus, if you get the Milan City Pass, it includes unlimited metro rides. This is particularly useful for getting to the central station in Milan to catch trains for your adventures outside the city.

Reason 5- Timeless Italian Charm

Even with its modern vibe, Milan is steeped in history. Iconic spots like the Duomo di Milano, Sforza Castle, and Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio give you a peek into the city’s past. They highlight Milan’s stunning architecture and historical importance, making it a paradise for history lovers.

Despite its modern side, Milan keeps its unique Italian charm. Whether you’re sipping an espresso at a local cafe, strolling through historic streets, or enjoying classic Milanese dishes like risotto alla Milanese and ossobuco, you get a taste of true Italy. Milan blends the old with the new effortlessly, offering a genuine Italian experience with a modern twist.

Milan’s cultural scene is diverse, showcasing museums, churches, and archaeological sites akin to those in Rome and Florence. With highlights like Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, one of the most renowned libraries, you’ll find countless museums and galleries waiting to be discovered. To experience them all without the hassle of buying individual tickets, the Milan City Pass offers a convenient way to explore these cultural gems while maximizing your time in the city.
